I decided this morning that I’ll never be able to look another transit system in the eye and tell it that it’s good after living here in Vienna. Seriously, this [...]

Anil Dash’s metaphor comparing a halal chicken restaraunt to the “blogosphere” is also instructive as a metaphor for the United States’s dealings with Saudi Arabia. Just replace cheap chicken with cheap oil, and it’s done.

One thing that bugs me is when people bust out the pop psychology and/or Freudian terms in casual conversation with little or no understanding. For example, on the MARTA today:
“Subconsciously, I know I need to work harder on (blah blah).”
If it’s “subconscious,” that means you CAN’T know it. Once you know it, it’s [...]

This morning, as I walked from the subway station into my office building, I saw a group of people standing around a television.
In this day and age, such a site makes my stomach flip and my heart sink.
Expecting to see some tragedy unfolding, I stepped up closer to the crowd and squinted to see BellSouth’s [...]

I was flipping through the channels, and there’s some movie coming out or out now that’s called Swimming Pool. It features some French hottie getting in and out of a swimming pool—a lot, from what I can tell. Anyway, Independent Film Channel ran a brief interview with the director, François Ozon.
While I’m sure [...]

Back when Atlanta’s music hot spot The Earl first opened, I made them a free web site and hosted it in what was to be an exchange of services. I was going to get “the hookup” for hooking them up. I’m all for this type of barter economy. I find it noble.
Well, being [...]

Darren always walks like a rock star down this street. It’s the one he feels most at home with. He used to sling burgers out of the window at Trusty on the corner, and he even sold fake Welsh regalia to tourists at The Welsh Dragon. That’s where he learned to hate [...]

The tubby, middle-aged, bearded computer nerd exiting the 14th floor restroom with his well-worn brown leather belt a notch tighter on his low-slung jeans and a copy of O’Reilly’s Mastering Regular Expressions tucked in the armpit of his faded cotton flannel shirt.
If you see this, it’s best to either wait until later or go to [...]

Sometimes I get this irrational idea that there’s only so much “goodness” in the world, almost like it’s a natural resource or a currency, and that the reason I have it so good is because I just have “more” of the “goodness” available to me and the reason some poor person in Congo has it [...]

I don’t like the juxtaposition of the word “monkey” with the term “pox.” It’d be better to call it “Prarie Dog Disease” or something. Just leave the monkey out of it. Monkeys rule.

I’ve noticed that the only videos they play on MTV/VH1/MuchMusic are either hip hop or pop punk. When did pop punk completely take over the world?
Every time I’m scanning the channels, I see “Arthur” and stop because I’m hoping to see a loveable, alcoholic millionare on his quest for love and laughter. But [...]

Today, on an oddity-filled MARTA-train excursion, Chris and I witnessed the following delightful scene:
Withing 100 yards of a MARTA station, a car full of MARTA employees, one half of a block from their office building, parking an official MARTA car in the parking lot of a shitty Mexican restaurant.

The news is grim. A toddler, watching TV on the sofa in his apartmet suddenly lurches forward, accompanied by a loud thud. Blood poors from his head, and a perfectly round hole has been punched through the wall behind the sofa, wher the toddler’s head once was. The parents scoop him up [...]

Every once in a while, I see an ad for this contraceptive patch one can wear for three weeks. It affixes to ones skin and provides the same protection as “the pill” without having to remember anything.
But here’s what gets me. Have you ever worn a band aid for several days, and seen how nasty, [...]
