I met this cool guy on Graben. I’ve seen him around before, and even have a shot or two of him wearing Lederhosen in my photostream somewhere.
Anyway, [...]

Spittelberg Christmas Market, originally uploaded by scottpartee.
I’m converted. I used to think Vienna’s Christmas markets were a bit overrated and charmless. In the early 90s, they were basically flea markets for cheap stuff. But the [...]

Arnold Apfel, originally uploaded by scottpartee.
Seriously. This is an individually-boxed, €0,99 apple from Styria featuring the “Arnold” brand. It says stuff about being powerful because it comes from the homeland of Arnold Schwarzenegger .

Hi everybody. Can I get another WTF? Here I am in Vienna, and the weather service is predicting hurricane force winds. So I’m thinking, “whatever”. Then I go to the online news and, sure enough, there’s a freaking hurricane hitting Germany as we speak.
So our buddy Kyrill is roaring down to Mitteleuropa. Personally, I’m not [...]

I’ve realized that the the only thing I miss about driving a car around is the ability to sing at the top of my lungs while listening to music that I chose.
Despite my sweet new iPod nano (courtesy of my sister and brother in law), I don’t think the UBahn riders of Vienna [...]

I was reading up on the Austrian states, when I noticed this in the Wikipedia entry about Vorarlberg:
In a referendum held in Vorarlberg on 11 May 1919 over 80% of those voting supported a proposal that the state should join the Swiss Confederation. However, this was prevented by the opposition of the Austrian Government, the [...]
I’ve noted before that Viennese bus drivers are a particularly malevolent form of life. Sure, occasionally a nice one slips into their ranks, but overall, I’ve seen the coldest, most viscious and surely most aggressive public transit abuses carried out by bus drivers.
I’ve seen them leave women with babies in strollers standing in the cold [...]
I’ve decided to force myself to type some shit with my new work laptop because the keyboard is fucking weird and I can’t get used to it. It’s got keys in weird places, sort of like the face goiters around here.
It’s a Siemens. While I appreciate the fact that my work entrusts me to have [...]

I’m not keeping good on my promise to write a more journal-style site so that the tens of interested people can keep up with what we’re doing and all of that type of thing. I’m not doing a good job of telling you how I work every day from 7:30-17:00 or so and then take [...]

Now that’s what I’m talking about. From an email list I subscribe to:
You might have seen the signs at several bars and restaurants in Vienna, and the rest of wine producing Austria. In case you are wondering what Sturm actually is, read and learn! We all know that wine is made of grape juice. To [...]

At first glance, this didn’t appear to be much of a locale. The menu was small and the initial look at the exterior revealed nothing special.
I picked up my menu and noticed a special coffee section that included “Austrian” or “Italian” coffee. That seemed like a good sign, so we went ahead and seated ourselves and awaited our waiter. Turns out the coffee was a false hope, but more on that in a moment.
We delighted in the fact that the cafe serves freshly-made soda zitrone, which is simply fresh lemon juice mixed with soda water but perfect for a very hot day.
We ordered an Italian bread salad with arugula and proscuitto and the “wok” salmon, which was served over a selection of braised julienne vegetables with basmati rice on the side. Both were excellent and especially good when one considers that this is a cafe and our total bill came out ot less than 25 EUR.
We finished with coffees. As usual, ithat’s a pretty big mistake here in Vienna if you care to drink good coffee. I ordered an Italian roast grosser brauner and my wife ordered a cappuccino. The coffee was ashtray nasty but served with flourish and style. It was slightly edible, so we drank it.
The service is friendly and efficient by Vienna standards. Even though our waiter never smiled, he brought Maple a bowl full of straweberries and cream.

Wild, in Landstrasse Hauptstrasse (III.) at Radetskyplatz 1, is a new favorite.
Unlike most Viennese-style coffee houses/cafes, this place actually serves decent coffee and has an unbelievably good selection of excellent deserts. I’m sorry to dis, but Viennese coffee houses and cafes—especially the big ones—deal in numbers and not quality. The deserts are often procured, the coffee is often crap, and the food is an afterthought. Not so with Wild.
We started our visit with some lovely fresh-squeezed lemonade spritzers and moved on to food.
A delicious polenta-vegetable tart served with a perfect little fresh tomatoe sauce was just right for eating at our outdoor table surrounded by bamboo. A braised pork shoulder with house made tomatoe tagliatelle was a fine dish, if a bit wrong for a hot day. It was so good, however, that it soon disappeared. The pork was moist and flavorful, and the pasta was firm and soaked up the remainder of the braising liquid perfectly.
Deserts were some of the best we’ve had in Vienna. An unsweetened apple strudel with freshly-whipped cream and a berry yogurt with fruit sauce rounded out the meal.
We plan to return again and again. A Vienna Bike station is right next door—so it’s easily accessible from anywhere.
