Holiday Feast Fact Finding Mission

November 19th, 2006 · 3 Comments

Hello peeps! I am preparing for the US’s best holiday, Thanksgiving, and am hoping a few of my tens of readers who know Vienna really well could answer the following questions:

  1. Does a good butcher exist anywhere in this city who can provide a (hopefully organic) free-range fresh turkey?
  2. What is the German (Austrian/Viennese) word for the herb we Americans call “sage”? update: I think I found the answer, now the question is where can I find it both fresh and dried?
  3. Has anyone seen Durkee’s fried onions for sale anywhere?
  4. Are yams on offer anywhere in this city?

Any answer gratefully received in the comments.

And the reason this is the best American holiday? Simplicity! Unlike most other holidays, which involve complicated gift-giving schemes, public celebrations or general dealage, Thanksgiving has a singular purpose: feasting. Although preparing such a feast is a tremendous amount of work, the focus is clear and the result is delicious.

Ad. 1: In fact, you can order every kind of meat nearly anywhere. You can get good meat at Radatz (1010, Schottengasse), Rumpel (1130, Hietzinger HptStr.) and Meinl (1010, Am Graben). I’m sure that every local butcher will make it, too, but since only these three are confronted with people asking for turkeys (it’s not that common in Austria), they should suit your needs.

Ad. 2: From now on, http://dict.leo.org/ is your friend in things like that!

Ad. 3: Sorry, never heard of that. (But I’d be interested in how they defer from other fried onions…)

Ad. 4: In every Supermarket. Search for “Süßkartoffel”.

I hope I could help… If there is more, well, you can do static pages ;-)

Thanks a ton! Regarding nr. 4, “sweet potatoe” and “yam” are sometimes different things. So far, what I have seen eaten here as “Süßkartoffel” is not what we’d refer to as a “yam” in the Southern US.

sage: salbei (i found fresh at Meinl before, you should be able to find, maybe at naschmarkt too, i have even seen a platnted one i think at a billa)

turkey i got one that was quite good at meinl last year (also looked everywhere)

also you can find silly things like canned pumpkin and jellied cranberry sauce if you want to do it that way instead of fresh at Bobby’s food mart next to the Blue Orange at Schleifmuehlgasse and margaretenstr
