Why do they keep all of this stuff in the Strassenbahnen? I’ve seen it in special hidden compartments under the seats and in buckets as depicted in the photograph. It’s only on the old ones, and it looks like it would be used for ice. However, I’m hoping we’re a longish way from freezes. So WTF?

    The sand is filled into the containers that are under some of the seats, the seats being directly above the wheels. It’s used all the time, not just in winter, to ensure that the wheels don’t block when the tram is braking. That’s why trams often seem to be coming out of huge dustclouds when they’re approaching a station during summer.
