I’ve had little time to write about it, but for those that are interested and/or puzzled, it is indeed true that I have resigned from BellSouth and taken a position across the country with DaimlerChryler’s Commercial Vehicles Division, also known as Freightliner. Freightliner is headquartered in beautiful Portland, Oregon—a city in which I’ve wanted to live since the ‘80s when I thought about attended Reed.
Anyway, I’ve been here a little over a month and it is much better than we expected, despite our high expectations. We live in Northwest Portland, which is a little trendy, but also very convenient and, in my opinion, one of the finest urban neighborhoods in the world. We can walk to anything we need, public transit is plentiful and easy to deal with, and it’s relatively quiet yet simultaneously energized.
My work is going well. It was slow at first, but now appears to be ramping up quite quickly. I also got to tour the factory in which they manufacture Class 8 (which means the BIG ones) trucks and it was awesome
I’ll have many more stories to relate, but for now, I’ll tell you that when I walked into the factory at Freightliner, there was a guy walking out with his buddy. I noticed he had his hand wrapped up in some medical tape, and just as I looked, he said to his buddy, “if they have to amputate, I’m not coming in tomorrow.”
It was so highly awesome that I just had to share.
