I remember being admonished by various authority figures for throwing away uneaten food because children were starving in whatever nation the authority figure chose to name. It always struck me as strange because, of course, they wouldn’t save it go give to hungry kids—even childrenin my hometown. If I offered, they’d [...]

Future of Music

The future of music is healthy according to this article By Dan Brown ofCBC News Online. (link via DECAFBAD
That’s my take on it, and then some.
The double-edged sword side of it all is the sheer volume of content we’re going to have to sift through. The winners will figure out how to do [...]

Justice For My Neighbor
March 24th, 2004 ·
While I may not have agreed with what my neighbors pulled by developing thirty townhomes on the lot next to their mansion1, I sure am glad that they may get some justice regarding the murder of their daughter.
1 My house is most assuredly not a mansion, nor is my neighborhood very fancy. But East [...]

When the papers in Savannah report it, you know it’s over. But I say PBR: long may it live

Boudin King, Redux

For those who haven’t been following the commentary on this entry, I’ll update you.
I posted a brief, but widely-linked, entry on what I think is the best boudin from the best boudin shop in the world: Boudin King. An intrepid reader and boudin afficionado by the name of Steven P. Keese agreed with my [...]

Old
March 18th, 2004 ·
One of the best parts about being old, married and giving no more than a single shit about anything remotely related to coolness is that one can, with impunity, like things that are enjoyable rather than confrontational or trendy.
Wearing this freedom like a cape, I purchased “Thank U” by Alanis Morisette on iTunes the other [...]

My wife and I hit a consignment sale at a local church just to see if there might be some crucial, insane baby product we haven’t yet purchased or received as a gift for our upcoming chitlin.
We didn’t find anything, but for $0.10 I got this package of vintage Kinderguard brand cabinet latches. [...]

I just figured out that individuals subscribing to the XML v.2 full entry RSS feed of this site (in English, the version that can be read completely without visiting Halfass.com directly) have only been getting the introductory paragraphs; a bit more than the excerpt, but far short of the “full” entry. Rather than feeding, [...]

The Jay Z Industry and the Sound Of A Paradigm Shift
March 10th, 2004 ·
Last week, Jay-Z, The Beatles, technology, an unknown DJ, and a little-understood media form called “blogs” collided. The explosion destroyed the music industry as we know it.

Why didn’t anyone tell me that the new computer was going to be a gateway drug for the iTunes Music Store?
Fela Kuti is my bagain purchase on iTunes. What other performer gives you a solid twenty minutes for your $0.99 U.S.? As my buddy Kenny points out, “that’s a whole side of an [...]

So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I’m a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The [...]

SCO Anti-Linux Attacks Funded My Microsoft?
March 5th, 2004 ·
I can’t remember where I found this, but according to the article, SCO’s recent litigation attacks against Linux vendors and service companies were funded by Microsoft .
It reads sort of like an Iran-Contra thing. The alleged actions of Microsoft seem sinister and underhanded and, if true, ruthless, strong business tactics.
I’m fairly certain there is not [...]
