We’ve been tracking it from our porch on the beach here in FLA. Pretty cool, actually.

Do you have a telescope? I have a pair of binoculars, but I can’t see surface detail with them.
A few years ago, Mars was pretty close. I’ve read (http://skyandtelescope.com is a good resource) that Mars comes close to Earth twice every seventeen years or so, separated by a few years, with the second pass being closer.
I have always liked stargazing, but only recently learned anything about astronomy. It is fascinating, even at an introductory level.

Without a doubt! That Jack Horkheimer Star Hustler guy is on to something. There are all sorts of great resources for the backyard astronomer.

I have a low-powered refractor telescope, but the tripod is long gone. If somebody has a photography tripod, I’m sure we could rig it.
You really can’t see squat inside the perimeter. We should take a night and go out into the mountains to see this. And no, I don’t mean 3:30am at chickamauga battlefield this time, gang. Any ideas?

My brother has some high-powered telescope, but naturally it is packed away with all of the rest of his stuff, since he is living overseas.
