This was the hot topic in the special investigations unit today. Long known to fraud investigators, the Travelers break into mainstream news with this sordid story of child abuse. Nomadic and clannish, they (allegedly) travel the country and pull various scams, largely bogus home contracting work. Odd that this is what propelled them into the spotlight after years of other shady doings.

That cracks me up: the “Irish Travelers.” Is that anything like working at the Renaissance fair? I wonder if those scenes ever cross paths or even have some weak alliance.

I don’t know, it’s probably closer the the “Carny” sub-culture than anything else. They do have a base camp in N. Augusta. From what I’ve heard, they have huge houses, and they park their nomad trailers in the back. The ladies supposedly dress to the nines always-coctail dresses for lunch at Shoneys. And they do have the brogue.

all of that is true. I’m from a small town in SC about 15 minutes from North Augusta. they’re quite a joke around here. they don’t trust banks, so they keep their money in gasoline cans (yeah. that’s safe) they don’t pay taxes, and often several people have the exact same names or even social security numbers so they can avoid paying them. AND they intermarry, with girls becoming wives as early as 11 years old.
as to the houses, they live in ‘em after a year’s up—they have to get rid of the evil spirits, or so i’m told. I’ve also heard they keep the trailers in the back for cooking because their food is so greasy and foul-smelling that it’s the only way to keep their house from being as nasty as their food. but that’s a rumor.
great website. i just found it and am enjoying it alot
