I was listening to “Moonlight feels right” by Starbuck the other day. It’s a pop gem from the mid 70’s and no, the band has no connection to the uber-yuppie coffee chain of the same name. The band makes it’s mark in musical history as being the first multi-Moog touring band. Their hit single “moonlight” strikes me as being particulary sneaky-the swirly synthesizers and xylophone solo trick the listener into Bay City Rollers/Pilot type innocence territory, but deeply ensconsed in the lyrics is the subversive line “I finally made a tricky french connection” which is a direct reference to the 70’s heroin flick. Starbuck-they’re the real slim shady.

“Ain’t nothing like the sky to dose a potion”. Doesn’t leave much to the imagination in retrospect, does it? Ah me, wide-eyed youthful illusions shattered. (Puff the Magic Dragon is about what???).
