Today I passed the second exam in the Sun Solaris 8 Operating Environment. Which means that if I were a dork, I would start appending it to my e-mail signatures.

I’ve always been somewhat “anti-cert” because I’ve known plenty of “certified” people in the technical world, and, with the exception of a few select certifications (like the high-level Cisco certifications), very few certified techies are worth a dog turd.

I had an MCSE tell me that TCP/IP wasn’t necessary for Internet access. He also told me that I was trying to “hack” his systems when I attempted to log in to a BDC as myself. He got all cock and said “I caught you.” Which, I guess, really wasn’t that hard considering that my login name was in the login dialog box. I just wanted a desktop. Sheesh!

This same MCSE chose a class B subnet for his entire organization of 800 plus devices in 3 different buildings using 10-space addresses and DHCP, a bunch of 10Mbps hubs and some fiber repeaters. Which, I suppose, isn’t a sin against God or anything, but it’s very lazy and it bit him in the ass when it was time to go wireless and the wireless ethernet bridges kept crashing under the weight of the broadcast traffic.

The list goes on and on. Someday, my encounters with the inept could merge into a funny story or two.

Anyway, today I join the world of “paper” techies. Hopefully, it will lead to more wothwhile paper soon.
