we’ve certainly backed ourselves up into a hole with this… because of mandatory sentencing for non-violent crimes, we have the burgeoning jail population which in turn makes for reduced sentences for hardcore crims who deserve to be in jail..drugs are a big root of this. but otherwise if someone’s not in jail for drugs, chances are they need and deserve to be in jail. Violent crime offenders especially. No, they will not be rehabilitated but safely locked away they can only bother other armed robbers. the bright side is: at least the U.S. is not like Nigeria where crime is so bad, the locals have taken to arming themselves with machetes to defend their families and property against roving bands of thugs. Suspected robbers are publicly beheaded on sight. yes we have developed this bizarre prison culture but it’s better than machete-land.

Our nation doesn’t need the machetes because we have cheap, easily-available hand guns.

I work in a jail as a nurse and I can honestly say that the criminal justice systme sucks! We have a “snitch” in the jail that gets all kinds of priviladges, yet he is a violent criminal. This is unfair to me! He is in isolation because he is a snitch, but yet get priveldges that he should not have according to protocol. Also, the “child support” system is horrible. The majority of the men that come into the jail for child support charges are men that are paying “back” support from years and years ago. When you arrest a man and put him in jail and he loses his job, how is he to pay child support? I have had men that have raised their children and for some reason the system picks them up and puts them in jail. The whole system is screwed up.
